About CERM-ESA

The East and South African Centre of Excellence in Educational Research Methodologies and Management (CERM-ESA) is one of 11 ‘Centres of African Excellence’ in Sub-Sahara Africa (http://www.digiface.org/) . CERM-ESA is the only one that focuses on education research, management and teacher education. The German Academic Exchange Service – with the support of the German Federal Foreign Office – is funding this programme.

CERM-ESA is being funded for two phases with approx. 3 Mio Euros.

Phase I: August 2014 – December 2018.
Phase II: January 2019 – December 2023
Phase III: January 2024 – December 2028.

CERM-ESA Objectives

The overall objective of CERM-ESA is to implement and run a Centre of Excellence for Educational Research Methodologies and Management (CERM-ESA) at Moi University, Kenya, with partners in Germany (University of Oldenburg), South Africa (Nelson Mandela University), Tanzania (University of Dar es Salaam) and Uganda (Uganda Management Institute). The Centre wants to deliver excellent academic results that serve as a basis for evidence-based decision making and for improving educational practice in the regions of East and South Africa particularly. Hence, specific objectives of CERM-ESA are to:

  • Advance and expand excellent and innovative educational research on methodologies, instruction and management strategies for African contexts;
  • Teach and train future educational leaders in terms of research methodologies, innovative management solutions and instruction techniques on Master’s and PhD level;
  • Advance capacity building and professional development in academia and management of the participating universities for sustainable institution building and for teachers and school principals to improve education and leadership in schools.
